Oh my Moonlight… – What happened at the Oscars?

What happened? What didn’t happen? Let me take you on a journey through the highs and the lows, the ups and the downs, the correct announcements and the… yeah.

Here is where I could give an opinion on why Suicide Squad shouldn’t have won and why Zootopia was the most underwhelming nominee in its category but there is a far more interesting and rich subject to delve into; the Best Picture category. Holy Dunaway there’s something to talk about…

For those who didn’t watch the Oscars, I’ll run you through what everyone is talking about…

Jimmy walking away from the situation I shall now detail.

Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty came out on stage to announce the final award of the night; the Best Picture. Warren opened the card and looked confused.

He re-read the card a few times before looking at Faye to fully express his confusion, then Faye took the card from him and abruptly announced the winner as La La Land.

Bonnie and Clyde at it again.

The producers of La La Land came on stage to thank their families and their crews and their turtles and so on… but then one of them said “we didn’t win by the way”.

There’s the confusion, cue the clear-up…

One of the producers comes back to the microphone to announce that the real winner was Moonlight and that they should come on stage to collect their awards. By the way, he handles this situation like a legend;

Champ of the year graciously hands the Oscar over to the real winner.

Warren Beatty then comes forward to explain what happened, detailing that he was given a duplicate of the previous card (the one for Emma Stone in La La Land). He saw that something was off and was therefore not too sure whether or not to continue, then Faye took the card and announced the winner as she believed it was written.

Jimmy Kimmel makes joke about Steve Harvey, journalists go mad, genius writer writes blog post on situation, etcetera, etcetera.

Do we know how this mix-up officially occurred? No.

Do we know that someone’s getting yelled at? Absolutely.

What’s your thought on the situation? Was that La La Land producer a champ or what? Is someone getting fired? (Yes. The answer to that last question is a definite yes.)
