The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of my absolute favourite games ever made despite it having a number of issues.
For those who don’t know, Skyrim is an open-world fantasy single-player RPG where you play as the Dragonborn (a character of your creation). The game begins with your character waking up in a wagon heading to a small town where you will be executed along with the leader of the rebellion when a dragon appears and causes enough ruckus just in time for you to escape.
This dragon causes stir all over the lands of Skyrim as dragons haven’t been seen since the ancient times and so were thought to be mythical. You escape the town with one of the other rebel prisoners or with a guard from the Empire -essentially choosing your stance in the war you may or may not participate in- and head off into the world of Skyrim where treacherous dungeons and blistering cold mountains and monstrous people, vicious monsters, peaceful farmers and rip-off lizard merchants await your presence.
You can be a hero or a villain, a Stormcloak or an Imperial, a human or a cat, etc.
The standard game itself which was released in 2011 has become one of the most awarded and played games of the century s0 why the re-release (for reasons other than money)? Graphics and bugs.
This remaster gave the developers the opportunity to up the graphics and technical riff-raff and also remove anything from the game which caused annoyance except they didn’t.
There weren’t any massive bugs in the original game but there were many small ones which caused slight annoyance and I was hoping they’d remove them. But instead of removing the bad bugs, they added good ones.
By “good ones”, I am of course referring to the many moments in the game where characters are talking to you whilst leaning against an invisible pylon or cleaning a bar they are currently morphed with.
I don’t see this as much of a problem as I find it quite funny whenever it happens but I would’ve been happier for them to remove the annoyances.
Another opportunity for the remaster was the opportunity to improve all the technical mumbo-jumbo which thankfully they did. The graphics may not look that stunning when you are playing because it becomes so easy to adapt to but when you pair it next to the previous graphics… wow. The terrain looks better, the sky looks better, the characters look better and essentially everything looks better.
Another great thing about this game (for console players at least) is the addition of mod support, which now prohibits the PC players from claiming that the use of mods is why they’re the “master race” of gaming.
However for PS4 players, the mods aren’t as abundant as they’re going to be on Xbox One. For some reason, Sony doesn’t want external assets being used in the game so any mods on the PS4 will be made using only resources from within the game, whereas Xbox One users (like myself) will have a whole feast of funny mods to come.
I’ve only installed three so far;
- One which makes the merchants insanely rich so they don’t run out of money when you sell them valuable items – helpful.
- One which removes the clouds from the map – helpful.
- One which replaces all of the giant spiders with Spider-Man – helpful and hilarious.
And I can only imagine what we’re getting next (I’m still waiting for the one which turns all the dragons into Thomas the Tank Engine).
Apart from a huge graphics boost and the mod support feature, Skyrim: Special Edition sadly does not contain any new content. The characters will all be the same, the quests will all be the same and your experience will probably be the same.
So if you enjoyed the original release, you’ll enjoy this (especially Xbox One users). But if you didn’t, this can’t offer you anything new apart from the mods which are hilarious to muck about with if you install a lot.
