Zoolander 2 (2016) – movie review

Zoolander 2 is directed by Ben Stiller and is the sequel to 2001’s Zoolander which was also directed by Ben Stiller. This film takes place in the present day as Derek Zoolander comes out of seclusion to help Interpol’s Fashion Division stop a conspiracy to kill famous models.

Being the sequel to a successful comedy about an unintelligent male-model being used to assassinate the Malaysian prime minister, it’s fairly safe to assume that Zoolander 2‘s story is going to be ridiculous. Don’t worry. It is.

It’s quite the rare occurrence to get a film sequel that is better than it’s predecessor and for some reason I assumed that this would be better than the original. I assumed wrong.

The first Zoolander was a truly original comedy that was funny all throughout and very well structured and written. Zoolander 2 on the other hand may still have some funny moments, but they aren’t as plentiful as in the first Zoolander and they tend to be holding hands with a barrage of cringe-worthy scenes.

A sequel with a bigger budget also comes with a bigger cast and that couldn’t be more true than in Zoolander 2. I’m pretty sure Zoolander 2 has just broken the Guinness World Record for most celebrity cameos in a film.

And with a record number of cameos does come a very large cast and with a very large cast do come a lot of characters and with too many characters comes the issue of overcrowding. I don’t say this very often but I think there were too many characters in Zoolander 2 to the point where you’ll forget a character after a couple of minutes because they’ve already thrown in two more. And there’s one particular character that got on my nerves a lot who you should be able to single out if you watch the movie.

Zoolander 2 isn’t particularly well-written. It’s cringe-worthy scenes outweigh it’s funny scenes and the funny scenes themselves tend to drag on too long. The story didn’t have much depth but I guess I raised my expectations too high. Zoolander 2 isn’t as good as the first Zoolander but it’s an okay comedy if you can handle some cringe.
