The Best and Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel(s)

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was welcomed into theatres in 2012 with critical and box office success worldwide. In 2015, the sequel (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) was released and welcomed with box office success and a critical “meh”. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was slightly different from the first and therefore can be compared. So here is the comparison.

The (first) Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was an enjoyable drama/comedy, which followed multiple elderly British people retiring to a misleading Indian hotel for the old. Upon having doubts about the hotel (and the location itself), they soon fall in love with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in different ways. The writing for this story was multiple short stories that couldn’t work on their own being linked together by the titular hotel, and it works.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015):

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was driven and pitched on the same concept and writing as the first film, only now that the characters have been developed and the hotel has become successful, it leaves more room for humour and drama. Except it didn’t quite work out the way you’d hope it would. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel introduces more characters and more stories that cause the film to become too confusing and predictable. Yet the film does have it’s enjoyable moments and is watchable (the first time around) so you should still check it out.
